(CNN)- Chants of “Justice for Linda Davis” echoed through Forsyth Park Tuesday evening as demonstrators gathered for a protest organized by the Party for Socialism and Liberation.

Organizers said the demonstration was held in response to the death of Linda Davis and to raise concerns about immigration enforcement operations in Savannah.

Some demonstrators criticized responses from federal officials, expressing disappointment in statements from leadership at the Department of Homeland Security and Congressman Buddy Carter. Protesters argued the issue should not be viewed along party lines.

“It doesn’t mean that necessarily we can stop putting our faith in America,” said protester Fiona Rizvi. “America is us as the people. It’s the immigrants that came here for a better life, it’s the generations that come that create a foundation, it’s the friends that we make along the way and the people we meet.”

Speakers also reflected on Davis’ work as a teacher and the impact her death has had on the community.

“Teachers are some of the most underappreciated people in our society,” said Tycen Tomms, an organizer with the Party for Socialism and Liberation. “Teachers are forced to spend their own paychecks on supplies for their students — that’s commitment to nurturing the youth. When I was reading about Doctor Linda Davis, I knew this was a working-class person just like me, just like my mother, and I knew that I had to step out and protest.”

Detric Leggett attended the protest and voiced frustration over how federal agents operated in Savannah leading up to Davis’ death. He also questioned why local leadership was not informed.

“This is something that should not have happened,” Leggett said. “If there’s any kind of action happening from police, any agency, then it’s something that they should have had a conversation with our Chatham County Police, our sheriff’s department. Even the mayor and our city police should have been aware that this type of action was happening in our streets.”
