MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) — The Macon Water Authority announced the death of its president and executive director, Ron Shipman, who died Friday evening.

Shipman was appointed interim president and executive director in 2022 and was later named to the permanent position. During his tenure, he worked with the authority’s board of directors, employees and community partners on water, sewer and stormwater infrastructure projects serving Macon-Bibb County.

Before joining the Macon Water Authority, Shipman spent more than three decades with Georgia Power, where he held multiple leadership roles prior to his retirement. He brought that experience to the authority and worked in a collaborative leadership capacity, according to the organization.

Gary Bechtel, chairman of the Macon Water Authority, said Shipman was committed to the authority and its mission and served the community in multiple roles.

Bechtel released the following statement:

“Personally, Ron Shipman was a dear friend, and it is a personal and painful loss. As a professional, Ron gave his all to the Macon Water Authority and was committed to its success. He was a leader in our community, serving in multiple capacities, and Macon-Bibb mourns his passing. On behalf of the members of the Macon Water Authority, we ask for thoughts and prayers for Ron’s wife, Anita, and his entire family.”

The Macon Water Authority said it extends condolences to Shipman’s family, friends and colleagues and acknowledged the impact of his death on employees and others who worked with him.

Information regarding memorial arrangements or organizational updates will be released as appropriate.
