MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – Macon-Bibb County officials unveiled improvements at Rosa Parks Square Wednesday aimed at making the downtown space more accessible while honoring local history.

According to Macon-Bibb County, the improvements at Rosa Parks Square included new seating and enhanced shading, as well as a wall to honor local luminaries. The space was also leveled to make it more accessible for events.

Macon-Bibb County Mayor Lester Miller says the park reflects the strength of the community and the importance of remembering history while continuing to move forward together.

“We’re very excited about having a great public space here in Macon, where people can come together in unity,” he said. “To me, having it on her birthday is even more special, and to have this great group of people to our chamber today to celebrate this and cut the ribbon means a lot for our community, as far as moving forward together in the future.”

Andrea Cooke, the development director for Macon Mental Health Matters, called Parks an “amazing figure.”

“Someone who so many of us could look up to, and understanding any one person can be a catalyst for change,” she said. “Remembering her on her birthday in this way is the best honor.”

Rosa Parks Square is located at 700 Poplar Street, across from City Hall in downtown Macon.
