MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – GDOT says brine operations began early Friday morning across multiple counties in the west central district, including Crawford, Peach, the northern half of Houston County, Coweta, Meriwether, Upson Counties. The treatment includes major roadways such as I-75, I-475, I-16, and several state routes.

GDOT spokesperson Juanita Birmingham say crews will continue applying brine overnight before transitioning to snow plows and spreader trucks Saturday morning as conditions worsen.

In total, nearly 365 GDOT maintenance workers across the district will be responding to the storm, while more than 570 snow removal units are ready statewide.

GDOT is urging drivers to avoid travel this weekend if possible to allow crews to work safely and efficiently. Motorists are also reminded to steer clear of brine trucks and snow plows, as crews need extra room to operate and rocks or debris can be kicked up, potentially cracking windshields.

Due to extremely cold temperatures and heavy snowfall expected, officials warn that roads may remain snow-covered even after treatment and plowing.

Drivers who must travel should slow down, leave extra stopping distance, and stay updated on road conditions through 511GA. GDOT also reminds the public that local and county roads may have different treatment plans.

Officials encourage Middle Georgians to stay home, stay safe, and enjoy the snow this weekend.
