MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT)- Investigators with the Bibb County Sheriff’s Office are looking into the death of an inmate found unresponsive this morning at the Bibb County Law Enforcement Center.

Inmate found during medication rounds

The incident began just after 8:30 a.m. when corrections deputies and medical staff were conducting morning medication call rounds. During the rounds, they located a 24-year-old male inmate unresponsive in his cell.

Jail medical staff immediately provided lifesaving measures. The individual was moved to the jail’s medical area, where arriving EMS personnel also rendered aid. Despite these efforts, the man was later pronounced deceased by Deputy Coroner Lonnie Miley.

Multiple agencies investigating

Because the fatality occurred in custody, an autopsy will be performed to determine the cause of death.

The incident is currently being investigated by Internal Affairs investigators from the Bibb County Sheriff’s Office of Professional Standards. Additionally, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) has been notified of the death.

Notification of next of kin

Authorities have not yet released the inmate’s name or the details of his original charges. Officials stated that this information will be made public once relatives have been located and notified.

The Sheriff’s Office noted that further information will be released as the investigation continues.

“The Bibb County Sheriff’s Office extends our sympathies to the decedent’s family and all those affected by his passing,” the agency said in a statement.
