Trump, Zelenskyy report progress in peace talks but no deal reached

(NBC)- President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy say progress was made during a nearly three-hour meeting Sunday, though a final peace agreement has yet to be reached.

Following the talks, President Trump described the meeting as productive, saying discussions covered a wide range of issues — including a recent phone call he held with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

“We had a terrific meeting. We discussed a lot of things,” Trump said. “I do think we’re getting a lot closer.”

A major focus of the talks centered on security guarantees for Ukraine — a key demand from President Zelenskyy, who has emphasized that lasting peace cannot exist without protections against future attacks.

Zelenskyy called the discussions productive, saying progress was made on multiple fronts.

“We have great achievements — a 20-point peace plan, with 90 percent agreed,” Zelenskyy said. “On U.S.-Ukraine security guarantees, 100 percent agreed. On U.S.-Europe-Ukraine security guarantees, almost agreed.”

However, one of the most contentious issues — territorial control — remains unresolved. When asked about a potential agreement over contested regions in eastern Ukraine, President Trump said negotiations are still ongoing.

“The word ‘agreed’ is too strong,” Trump said. “But we’re getting closer to an agreement on that.”

While Trump said Russia appears interested in reaching a deal, he confirmed that Moscow has not agreed to a temporary ceasefire ahead of a broader peace agreement.

Additional talks are expected in the coming weeks. Zelenskyy said working-level meetings will continue and that President Trump has invited Ukrainian and European leaders to Washington for further negotiations.

Trump did not offer a firm timeline but said the direction of talks should become clearer within weeks.
