Atrium Health provides holiday toy safety tips ahead of Black Friday
As Black Friday approaches and families prepare for holiday shopping, Atrium Health Levine Children’s Hospital is reminding parents to keep toy safety at the top of their list.
MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – Officials emphasize that toys should always match a child’s age, skills and developmental stage. This is especially important for children younger than 3, who are at higher risk for choking. Larger pieces are recommended for toddlers, and families are urged to avoid toys with small, detachable parts.
Atrium Health also warns that toys containing magnets or button batteries can be extremely dangerous if swallowed. These items can cause serious internal injuries, and should not be given to young children.
For gifts involving physical activity, such as bicycles, scooters or skates, parents are encouraged to include appropriate protective gear. Helmets, knee pads and elbow pads help reduce the risk of injury and should be used every time the toy is in use.
Once gifts are opened, families should immediately discard plastic wrapping, ties and packaging materials. These items can quickly become choking or suffocation hazards if left within reach of children.
Atrium Health recommends that adults demonstrate how to use new toys safely and supervise children while they play, especially when they are handling unfamiliar equipment or items.
