MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – Legendary journalist Tom Johnson filled the Presidents Dining Room at Mercer University on Wednesday to discuss his new memoir, “Driven: A Life in Public Service and Journalism from LBJ to CNN”.

Johnson, who once served as publisher of the Los Angeles Times and President of CNN, reflected on his decades-long journey in journalism and public service. His memoir dives into the debates surrounding government, the media, and the future of truth.

During the event, Johnson spoke with 41 NBC’s Fiona King to offer his perspective on the current state of journalism and the often-strained relationship between the media and government officials.

He expressed concern for communities like those in Middle Georgia, emphasizing the harm caused by ongoing accusations against the media.

“I believe that the nation is hurting because of the accusations against the press being called fake news and much more. I worry a lot about the disappearance of newspapers, print newspapers that have been the source of local news throughout American history.” Johnson shared.

He also opened up about his personal struggle with depression, encouraging others not to give up. His message to the community was clear: pursue your dreams, discover your passion, and seek mentors who can help you achieve your goals.
