GHSA Releases New Reclassification Plan for 2026–28 Seasons
Several Middle Georgia schools move up under GHSA’s latest realignment, including Mary Persons’ jump from Class 3A to 5A.

MIDDLE GEORGIA – (41NBC/WMGT) – The Georgia High School Association (GHSA) announced Monday its reclassification of schools for the next two athletic seasons, reshaping the landscape of high school sports across the state.
Earlier this year, the GHSA confirmed it would return to a seven-class system – ranging from Class A through 7-A – with every program moving up one classification beginning in the 2026-27 school year.
Among the notable changes, several Middle Georgia programs are making the move to higher competition levels. Northeast, Southwest, Washington County and Crisp County are all set to move from Class 2A to 3A.
One of the biggest shifts comes from Forsyth, where Mary Persons High School will make a rare two-class jump, going from Class 3A to 5A, after significant growth in student enrollment.
The GHSA’s new alignment will take effect starting with the 2026 fall sports season and remain in place through 2028. The move aims to balance competition statewide while accounting for enrollment changes and regional growth trends.
