(CNN) – A Buckhead family is in shock after police say a father shot and killed his own son during a confrontation outside the 55 Pharr Apartments on Friday.

Dee Clyburn says she’s still struggling to process what happened — that her older brother, 32-year-old Durante Schofield, is gone, and their father, 54-year-old Durante Rowe-Tolliver, is behind bars.

“I wouldn’t have ever imagined, not in a hundred years, that this was the phone call I was getting,” Clyburn said in a phone interview. “That’s my big brother. I will never be able to call him again.”

Clyburn described Schofield as a proud father of two young children and an entrepreneur who worked as an independent contractor in metro Atlanta. “He cared genuinely and deeply about people. He was a passionate person,” she said.

Earlier Friday, a judge denied bond for Rowe-Tolliver, who investigators say drove to the apartment complex after learning his son had been involved in a car crash. According to an affidavit, the two began arguing inside the apartment but appeared calm when officers first arrived.

Once they stepped outside, police say the argument reignited. Rowe-Tolliver told investigators he believed his son reached toward his waistband “as if he had a gun,” prompting him to fire at least a dozen shots. Police later said Schofield was unarmed.

“Just remember him as being a lover and a giver, a helper,” Clyburn said through tears.

The investigation remains ongoing.
