(NBC)- French police have arrested two suspects in connection with the daring $102 million jewel heist at the Louvre Museum in Paris.
According to NBC’s Raf Sanchez, one of the suspects was detained at Charles de Gaulle Airport while allegedly attempting to flee the country for Algeria. Both men, said to be in their early 30s, are known criminals with prior histories of robbing jewelry stores.
Authorities say the arrests came after investigators matched DNA recovered from the crime scene inside the museum’s Apollo Gallery, where the French crown jewels were stolen last week.
While the arrests mark a major breakthrough in the case, police have yet to recover the stolen jewels — which include pieces once belonging to Empress Eugénie, wife of Napoleon III. Investigators believe the suspects are part of a larger robbery network and fear the jewels may have already been dismantled or sold.
Still, officials remain hopeful. The arrests were made in Paris, leading authorities to believe the crown jewels could still be hidden somewhere in the French capital.
