October is Breast Awareness Month, and a nurse from Piedmont Macon is urging early detection and offering resources for the community.

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – October is Breast Awareness Month, and a nurse from Piedmont Macon is urging early detection and offering resources for the community.

Kimberly Lewis, manager of oncology services at Piedmont Macon, said breast cancer is the most common form of cancer in women other than skin cancer and that 1 out of 8 women will be diagnosed with the invasive cancer. Lewis also highlighted services Piedmont provides after a diagnosis, including a free navigation service.

“The service helps us be with the patient and the family and help educate them, help them through the diagnosis all the way through survivorship.”

Lewis emphasized that screening and early detection are crucial, noting breast cancer is most treatable when caught early.

“Women starting in their early twenties should have an awareness of breast cancer and should be doing self examinations monthly” says Lewis “Forty is the recommended age that woman should start doing mammograms, but many women may need to do it earlier depending on their personal and family history.”
