Jimmy Kimmel returns after suspension as Disney faces backlash, media preemptions

(CNN)- Jimmy Kimmel is back behind the desk at Jimmy Kimmel Live! after nearly a week-long suspension from Disney. The network pulled the late-night host following controversial remarks he made in the wake of conservative activist Charlie Kirk’s murder — a move that drew both political backlash and criticism of censorship.
In his return monologue, Kimmel addressed the controversy directly. “I don’t think the murderer who shot Charlie Kirk represents anyone. This was a sick person who believed violence was a solution, and it isn’t — ever,” Kimmel said. He also leaned on humor to underscore his point about free speech, joking, “The guy in Germany offered me a job. Can you imagine? This country has become so authoritarian the Germans are like, ‘Come here!’”
Audience members at the taping said the atmosphere felt both heavy and celebratory. “There was a gravity but also happiness just being back,” said attendee Kathy Hopkins.
Disney stated that the suspension was lifted after “thoughtful conversations with Jimmy.” But critics, including former President Donald Trump, claimed the company initially caved to political pressure. Trump warned Kimmel’s return “puts the network in jeopardy” and pledged to “test ABC out on this.”
Meanwhile, major broadcasters Sinclair and Nexstar Media continue to preempt the show on their stations. The FCC chairman applauded their decision, framing it as a stand against national programming. Analysts note that while the preemptions pose a financial hit for Disney, pulling Kimmel off the air risked alienating loyal fans.
