U.K., Canada, and Australia recognize Palestinian state

(NBC)- The United Kingdom, Canada, and Australia formally recognized a Palestinian state on Sunday, marking a significant diplomatic shift as the war in Gaza nears its second year.
British leaders said the decision followed Israel’s refusal to agree to a ceasefire. Prime Minister Keir Starmer emphasized that the recognition is meant to “revive the hope of peace for the Palestinians and Israelis,” and stressed it should not be seen as a reward for Hamas. The militant group launched an attack on southern Israel in 2023 that killed around 1,200 people and led to the kidnapping of 251 others.
The move underscores growing international disapproval of Israel’s actions in Gaza and adds pressure on the country’s government. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu dismissed the recognition effort, saying the establishment of a Palestinian state “will not happen.”
