(CNN)- Two students were wounded and a juvenile suspect is dead following a shooting at Evergreen High School in the Denver area on Wednesday.
Authorities say the gunman opened fire with a revolver, sparking chaos inside the school. Video from the scene showed terrified students fleeing and ringing the doorbell of a nearby home for safety.
Brenner Johnson, a student inside at the time, recalled the fear: “I was scared, and I felt, like, sick, cause I was worried. There was a message over the intercom, and they basically just said that, like, they were going into lockdown.”
According to the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office, first responders arrived within two minutes and were in contact with the suspect shortly after. Officials estimate more than 100 law enforcement officers swarmed the school during the incident.
One parent expressed gratitude for the swift action: “So grateful for the really brave staff here in Jefferson County and at Evergreen and so grateful for first responders.”
Elected officials are also reacting. Colorado Representative Jeff Hurd called the shooting “heartbreaking” as a father of five. Governor Jared Polis urged students to take advantage of free mental health resources available statewide. Senator John Hickenlooper called on Congress to find bipartisan solutions to stop school shootings, warning: “If there were a terrorist trying to hurt our country, what more harmful thing could they do but make our children scared to learn, scared to go to school, right? We’re terrorizing ourselves.”
