Protests grow in Israel as Gaza strikes face scrutiny

(NBC)- Outrage is intensifying in Israel as protests swell over the government’s handling of the Gaza war and the ongoing hostage crisis.

In Tel Aviv, an estimated half a million demonstrators took to the streets, led in part by families of hostages still held inside Gaza. Protesters are demanding that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu agree to a deal that would end the war and secure the release of those captives.

The unrest comes as President Trump prepares to host what the White House is calling a major meeting in Washington later today focused on Gaza.

Meanwhile, Israel is facing scrutiny for two deadly airstrikes on Monday that killed 20 people, including five journalists. The Israeli military initially said the area was targeted because a Hamas camera was monitoring Israeli troops. But witnesses, including five journalists on the ground, told NBC News that the only camera on site was operated by Reuters on the roof of Nasser Hospital.

Cameraman Hossam al-Masri, who was killed in the strike, had been broadcasting live from the hospital roof — a feed that journalists say required prior coordination with Israeli authorities.

The Israeli military now says it is reviewing “field decision-making” as well as the type of ammunition used in the strikes.
