Possible Name and Physical Changes to Come to Rosa Parks Square, Downtown Macon

The size and look of Rosa Parks Square in downtown Macon could soon see a new look, but also a new name.

Backed by a $10,000 gift by State Bank, Mayor Robert Reichert submitted a proposal to change the look, size, and name of the park.

City council’s Appropriations Committee is set to discuss the changes at Monday night’s meeting.

According to the Mayor’s spokesperson, Chris Floore, the proposed changes would remove the two parking lots in the park, and turn them into green space.

According to Floore, that would essentially double the size of green space of the park.

The park currently sits on two different levels of land, with a retaining wall separating the three to four foot difference.

The proposed plan would level that land out, and get rid of the dividing wall.

Also in the proposal is changing the name from Rosa Parks Square to Macon Civic Square.

Appropriations Committee Chairman, Tom Ellington says, he feels a compromise on the name should be reached if his committee decides to move forward with the plan.

“I think everybody already knows it’s in Macon. I think a good compromise would be to call it Rosa Parks Civic Square. I think that’s a good sounding name,” Ellington says.

The Appropriations Committee is set to discuss the proposal at tonight’s committee meeting.

If Ellington’s committee passes the proposal, then the Ordinances and Resolutions Committee will look at it next week, to determine whether or not to place the proposal on the agenda for full council to vote on.
