UPDATE: Man dead after fatal Washington County crash with tractor trailer

UPDATE (8/19/2025 at 3:09 p.m.) A man has died after a fatal vehicle collision on Monday afternoon, according to Georgia State Patrol.
The man has been identified as 70-year-old William McCoy of Wrightsville.

WASHINGTON COUNTY, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – A Washington County driver was airlifted with life-threatening injuries after crashing into a tractor trailer Monday afternoon when authorities say he ran a red light at a busy intersection, according to Georgia State Patrol.
At approximately 12:14 p.m. on August 18, a Nissan Frontier was traveling northbound on Deepstep Road as it approached the intersection of State Route 540. Investigators determined the driver failed to stop at a red light and struck the right side of a tractor trailer that was traveling eastbound on SR 540.
The driver of the Frontier was transported by medical helicopter to Wellstar MCG Health in Augusta. The tractor-trailer driver was not injured.
The crash remains under investigation by Washington County authorities.
