Texas redistricting showdown intensifies as Democrats flee and California joins fight

The Texas redistricting standoff is reaching a critical juncture.

(CNN)- The Texas redistricting standoff is reaching a critical juncture. State Republicans are pushing to redraw congressional maps early — a move analysts say could give them five additional seats in the 2026 midterms.

In response, Texas House Democrats have remained outside the state to break quorum and block a vote. They’ve set two conditions for their return.

First, they want the current special session to adjourn — something expected to happen today. Governor Greg Abbott says he’ll immediately call a new session, which would require Republicans to refile the bill. “Those runaway Democrats are required to act on that agenda. They’re failing to do their duty,” Abbott said.

Second, Democrats want California lawmakers to propose their own new congressional maps to counter changes in Texas. The California legislature is expected to take up the matter next week. “We’re putting the maps on the ballot, and we’re giving the power to the people,” said Governor Gavin Newsom.

Texas Democrats say their fight is about ensuring more voters have a voice. “They’re trying to fix these maps to predetermine the outcome of the 2026 elections in favor of a Republican majority,” said Democratic Representative Gina Hinojosa.
