Fire Department Urges People to Use Caution with Space Heaters

The chilly months of winter bring with it the increased risk of fires caused by space heaters. 

Fire Prevention Director, Chief Larry Smallwood of the Macon Fire Department, urges those who use space heaters, to use practice when it’s plugged in.

Smallwood says the number one thing space heaters need, is space.

“The rule of thumb is a 36 inch clearance around the space heater,” Smallwood says.

He also says keeping the unit away from furniture and beds is extreemly important, since those are so flammable.

Another rule to follow is to only use heaters with a three prong plug, and plug them directly into the wall.

Do not use extension cords.

Also, monitor the cord when the heater is plugged in, checking that it is not over-heating.
