MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – It’s National Cancer Survivors Month and today survivors celebrated at Piedmont Macon to the rhythm of music.

Building C was jamming to the sound of various percussion instruments with some people even dancing as Cancer Survivors and Piedmont Macon staff participated in a drum circle led by Dr. Gloria Cisse and Rodney Mason from The Southern Center for Choice Theory.

Rhonda Miller, a Breast Cancer Survivor of two years, shares her excitement about participating in the drum circle for the first time.

“Well, (laughs) yeah, I wanted to do a little shingle, shingle, so yeah, but it made me feel freedom by hearing the rhythm,” said Miller.

They also listened to one of the survivor’s emotional story and signed and tied purple ribbons on the Tree of Hope, right outside of the building, representing survivors or the memory of someone who was lost to cancer.

“Having events like these, we can connect with other survivors. We can share our stories,” said Miller.

“It brings awareness for cancer. It brings awareness that they’re not alone, that there’s other patients in the community that are going through the same struggles that they are,” said Kimberly Lewis, Manager of Oncology Services for Piedmont Macon. “They’re there to, you know, develop those relationships so that they can help each other as they go through their journeys.”

Piedmont Macon says they understand that survivorship is not just about living after cancer, it’s also about thriving. Their next event, a Healthy Eating and Cancer Treatment class will be on Thursday, June 12th from 10 to 11 a.m.
