Georgia to issue third surplus tax refunds starting this week, up to $500 per household
Refunds of up to $250 for individuals and $500 for joint filers are being issued to Georgians who filed their 2023 and 2024 taxes and met eligibility requirements.

ATLANTA (41NBC/WMGT) – Georgia will begin issuing a third round of one-time surplus tax refunds this week to eligible taxpayers, according to a news release from Governor Brian Kemp’s office.
The refunds, made possible through House Bill 112 passed during the 2025 legislative session, are the result of Georgia’s conservative budgeting and strong economic performance, according to the release. Most eligible residents who filed both their 2023 and 2024 individual income tax returns before the deadlines can expect to receive their refund “within the coming weeks.”
“Because we’ve managed our state’s resources wisely, we’re again able to return money to hardworking Georgians who know how best to use it,” Governor Kemp said in the release. “Along with our acceleration of the largest income tax rate cut in state history, this latest refund is just one more way we’re working to support the people of our state, their families, and their businesses, because that’s not the government’s money, it’s theirs!”
To qualify, taxpayers must have paid into the system, filed both their 2023 and 2024 returns on time, and must not owe the state Department of Revenue. Refunds will vary based on 2023 tax liability, with maximum amounts set at:
- $250 for single filers and married individuals filing separately
- $375 for head of household filers
- $500 for married individuals filing jointly
This marks the third time under Governor Kemp’s administration that the state has returned surplus revenue, following similar measures in 2022 and 2023.
The announcement comes alongside the passage of House Bill 111, which lowers Georgia’s income tax rate from 5.39% to 5.19%. The new rate reflects the second acceleration of the tax cut implementation schedule originally signed into law in 2022.
“Our Department is ready to get this third round of refunds out the door efficiently and securely,” State Revenue Commissioner Frank O’Connell said. “We appreciate the continued partnership with the Governor and the General Assembly in making this happen.”
Taxpayers can check their refund eligibility through the Georgia Tax Center’s Surplus Tax Refund Eligibility Tool by entering their tax year, Social Security Number or Tax Identification Number, and Federal Adjusted Gross Income.
