GOP scrambles to finalize “One, Big Beautiful Bill” with last-minute changes

(CNN)- House Republicans have unveiled a revised version of what President Donald Trump has dubbed his “one, big beautiful bill,” packed with sweeping tax breaks, benefit cuts, and policy changes — many added in a last-minute push to secure enough votes within their slim majority.

“We have kept this bill on a very delicate balance,” said House Majority Leader Rep. Steve Scalise (R-LA), as party leaders rushed to appease lawmakers with varying concerns.

Among the latest additions: a new provision allowing certain income groups to deduct up to $40,000 in state and local taxes — a notable shift designed to win over moderates in high-tax states. That’s on top of the bill’s trillions of dollars in new or extended tax cuts.

“This is about providing tax relief to middle-class families,” said Rep. Mike Lawler (R-NY).

But critics warn the tax cuts could come at a cost. The nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office (CBO) estimates the legislation would add more than $3 trillion to the national debt over the next eight years.

To address concerns from fiscal conservatives, GOP leaders also moved up the timeline for imposing new Medicaid work requirements. While Republicans argue the change targets able-bodied adults, analysts say the cuts — projected to total hundreds of billions of dollars over the next decade — could also impact children, seniors, and people with disabilities.

“Now we have to save Medicaid. Hands off our Medicaid,” said Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), denouncing the proposed changes.

Other provisions include an accelerated phaseout of energy tax credits, a halt on the sale of certain federal lands, and the elimination of the tax on firearm silencers. One amendment even introduces a new child savings account named after former President Trump.

“Everyone’s going to have something to go home and brag about,” said House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA).
