MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – A major milestone was celebrated Tuesday as three families in Lynmore Estates received the keys to their brand-new homes, marking a powerful step forward in their journey to homeownership.

“I’m feeling excited,” said Laquanda Ferguson, one of the new homeowners who she says was turned down twice before finally being approved through the program. “I’m overwhelmed. I am so overwhelmed because this is a milestone for me. Like, it’s amazing. I’m a homeowner.”

Down Dorothy Avenue, you’ll now find three newly constructed homes owned by the Ferguson, Blackwell, and Williams families—thanks to the work of Macon Area Habitat for Humanity.

Ivey Hall, Executive Director of Macon Habitat, says the achievement was reached through a collaborative effort.

“Homeownership is so important to our community,” Hall said. “They’re also helping to stabilize this neighborhood, and they’re helping to stabilize schools because kids will grow up in the same schools—because they’re homeowners now and so they’re not bouncing school to school.”

The construction was made possible by more than 500 volunteers, with each homeowner contributing 300 hours of sweat equity to help build their homes, according to Hall.

“It’s been a journey… but we did it,” said Ferguson.

The homes were built on land previously cleared as part of Macon’s Blight Fight initiative, which works to eliminate abandoned and dilapidated properties in targeted neighborhoods.

With this addition, Habitat for Humanity now has more than 70 homes in the Lynmore Estates community.
