Keep Macon-Bibb Beautiful, Publix host community cleanup at Memorial Park Recreation Center
“Being responsible citizens in our community is ingrained in our culture. Our founder, Mr. George always believed in that and so whenever we can give back to our community in more ways than one, then we're always happy to be here,” said Destry Smith, Assistant Store Manager for Publix.

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – Keep Macon-Bibb Beautiful and Publix partnered together on Wednesday hosting a community cleanup at the Memorial Park Recreation Center.
According to Publix this is part of the company’s bi-annual Publix Serves Week where more than 7,000 associates across eight states will volunteer in over 150 projects across a two week period with state parks and other non-profit organizations focused on environmental sustainability.
25 of those employees from various stores around Middle Georgia volunteered to be a part of today’s cleanup, picking up trash and debris along with the Parks & Beautification Department who handled the heavier items.
“The first thing that everyone can do and the easiest thing that everyone can do is simply not litter,” said Asha Ellen, Executive Director for Keep Macon-Bibb Beautiful.
“Unfortunately, in certain areas, we do have a litter problem here in our community, but we are making strides every day and we’re able to do that by having volunteers and partners such as Publix,” said Ellen.
“We’re beautifying the area. We’re picking up debris, trash and just making it green and just making it so families can come out here and enjoy the park and have a good time,” said Destry Smith, Assistant Store Manager for Publix Super Markets, Store 1891, in Hampton, Georgia.
“Being responsible citizens in our community is ingrained in our culture. Our founder, Mr. George always believed in that and so whenever we can give back to our community in more ways than one, then we’re always happy to be here,” said Smith.
“It’s definitely a great feeling to be able to come back to the place where I once played as a child and be able to give back. So other children who are in this community can have a safe and clean community,” said Ellen.
Memorial Park Recreation Center is located at 2465 Second Street.
