MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – The 2nd Street bridge over Riverside Drive in Macon-Bibb County is closed indefinitely after a crash damaged the bridge beams, according to the Georgia Department of Transportation.

An equipment truck struck the bridge, and a state inspector determined repairs are needed. Georgia DOT engineers are now planning how to fix the damage. Both eastbound and westbound lanes on the 2nd Street Bridge are shut down, but Riverside Drive remains open under the bridge.

Detour routes and signage are in place to help drivers navigate the closure.

“Dates may change due to weather or other factors,” Georgia DOT stated in a news release. “Motorists are advised to expect delays, exercise caution, and reduce their speed while traveling through work zones.”

The department encourages drivers to check real-time traffic updates by calling 511, visiting 511ga.org, or using the Georgia 511 app.
