Scam targets family of inmate

JONES COUNTY, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – A family was recently targeted by a scam, promising their loved one could be released with an ankle monitor in exchange for money, according to a news release.

The Jones County Sheriff’s Office is sharing red flags that could help you spot a scam. JCSO says employees will never contact you and ask for money.

It’s common for scammers to claim you missed jury duty and need to pay a fee or that you have warrants and must pay to have them dismissed.

If you get a call like this, hang up and call the sheriff’s office at (478) 986-3489.

Residents should also be wary of requests to send money through online platforms like CashApp, Bitcoin, or by purchasing gift cards.

The Jones County Sheriff’s Office adds that any payment they request would have to be made in person, at their office.
