Officials urging preparedness as strong storms approach Middle Georgia
Heavy rain, gusty winds could lead to downed trees and powerlines

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – Strong storms are headed for Middle Georgia Wednesday morning, potentially bringing heavy rain and gusty winds that could down trees and power lines in some areas.
The Macon-Bibb Emergency Management Agency is urging residents to stay alert.
Spencer Hawkins, the Director at the Macon-Bibb EMA, is providing helpful tips to keep you safe.
“Making sure that you have a plan and understand the plan, what you should do, where you should go,” he said. “‘We’re all going to this closet if something happens, things like that.’ And that’s especially important if you have young children.”
An emergency kit should include bottled water, nonperishable food, a flashlight and extra batteries.
With strong winds in the forecast, Hawkins warned of potential flying debris.
“Not necessarily the wind that we’re worried about,” he said. “It’s what the wind picks up and throws, and so, the wind at 30 miles an hour is windy, but it’s not bad. But that potted plant moving at 35 miles an hour can be very detrimental. And we would not want anyone to get hurt.”
Hawkins says it’s also important to have a weather radio. He says they have free radios available for pick up at the EMA if you are in need of one.
