John R. Lewis Elementary School holds symbolic Selma to Montgomery march

"I know that John Lewis is looking down on Macon, Georgia, on our school, and being so proud of our little ones today. I know I was," said Patricia Williams, organizer of the march and kindergarten paraprofessional at John R. Lewis Elementary School.

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – After hosting its first Black History Fashion Show on Friday, John R. Lewis Elementary School continued its Black History Month celebration Monday with a symbolic march from Selma to Montgomery on school grounds honoring historical figure John Lewis.

Students sang with teachers We Shall Overcome and chanted “JRL” and “Freedom” while marching with signs they spent two weeks working on, inspired by Lewis’s contributions to Black History.

“This event today was the brainchild of our paraprofessional, Ms. Patricia Williams,” said Adrienne Hurley, Principal of John R. Lewis Elementary School. “She has 50 years in education, and she witnessed what we did today in real life. She wanted our students to understand what Mr. John R. Lewis meant by ‘good trouble.'”

Principal Hurley says they use John Lewis’s phrase, “good trouble,” to teach students how to be a leader in the community, do well in school and give back.

“I know that John Lewis is looking down on Macon, Georgia, on our school, and being so proud of our little ones today. I know I was,” said Patricia Williams, organizer of the march and kindergarten paraprofessional at John R. Lewis Elementary School.
