Miller Fine Arts Magnet Middle School holds Career Fair
“It's all about graduating and graduating, with knowledge, not just getting a piece of paper, but having knowledge,” said Verda Colvin, Associate Justice of the Georgia Supreme Court.

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – It’s National Counselors Week, and Miller Fine Arts Magnet Middle School held a Career Fair on Friday.
Many different businesses were in attendance, with people sharing their experience with students from music all the way to law.
“Talking to kids as they come around to see all the possibilities for their future in their careers, it’s been rewarding,” said Verda Colvin, Associate Justice of the Georgia Supreme Court. “I even had one student cry when she came to meet me because she said she felt so honored, and it just made the whole day worthwhile to know that it matters to them to see someone like them who’s, you know, got to the positions that they aspire to be one day.”
Avery Brown, Owner of BeatsByAvery and signed to legendary award winning Drumma Boy, was one of the youngest in the room at just 15 years old.
“I don’t know nobody in Macon,if I’m being honest, that’s not really doing the things I’m doing, or trying to get on the right path,” said Brown. “I just want to give back and teach the kids how to produce and engineer.”
“We see students all the time where they say that they just felt they weren’t supported in their academics, and we want them to know that at any stage that they have the support,” said Laura Vermillion, Assistant Director of Admissions for Mercer University. “Not just because we, of course, would want them to come to Mercer when they are in college, but to know that we’re part of this community and want them to know that we’re here for them.”
“It’s all about graduating and graduating with knowledge,” said Colvin. “Not just getting a piece of paper, but having knowledge.”
“I want to just let them know, not to give up, just keep going and going,” said saxophonist Tracie Washington Scott. “Even though it may get hard, I want them to know that, keep going because it will pay off.”
Principal Shan Gibson says they are trying to expose students to as much as possible, focusing on various pathways to further their future education.
