Tax season begins January 27: BBB offers tips for finding a trustworthy tax preparer
The IRS will begin accepting 2024 tax returns on Monday, January 27, and the filing deadline is set for Tuesday, April 15.

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) — The IRS will begin accepting 2024 tax returns on Monday, January 27, and the filing deadline is set for Tuesday, April 15.
As the tax season begins, the Better Business Bureau of Central Georgia is urging taxpayers to choose their tax preparers carefully to avoid scams and ensure accurate filings.
According to the BBB, finding a qualified tax professional is particularly important for those navigating complex tax situations, major life changes or business ownership. The organization says only enrolled agents (EAs), certified public accountants (CPAs) and attorneys are authorized to represent clients before the IRS in audits, appeals and collection issues.
The BBB also provides tips for selecting a tax preparer:
- Check credentials. Ensure your preparer has the qualifications needed for your tax situation.
- Avoid big promises. Be cautious of preparers guaranteeing unusually large refunds or offering refund anticipation loans, which can reduce your return.
- Ask about fees. Discuss costs upfront to avoid surprises and ensure transparency.
- Consider availability. Choose someone who can assist you year-round if IRS issues arise.
- Use referrals and reviews. Ask family and friends for recommendations and check BBB.org for consumer feedback.
Also Friday, the BBB warned consumers of scammers impersonating the IRS to trick taxpayers into sharing personal information, claiming they’re eligible for a $1,400 stimulus check. These fraudulent messages often look official, but they’re part of a phishing scheme designed to steal your sensitive data, the BBB said.
