UPDATE: I-16 East back open after semi-truck crashes into barriers, shuts down both lanes

UPDATE (9:12 p.m.) –  The Bibb County Sheriff’s Office confirmed there were no injuries reported in a crash Thursday afternoon on Interstate 16 East near Exit 2.

Deputies say a semi-truck struck multiple barriers. The crash caused all lanes to be shut down and traffic was redirected off the interstate to Exit 2.

Crews worked to clear debris before reopening the roadway. As of 9:12 p.m., the interstate is back open to traffic.


UPDATE (6:15 p.m.)  – The Georgia State Patrol said in response to a 41NBC inquiry that it’s not investigating the crash or present at the scene. However, GSP did say the Motor Carrier Compliance Division (MCCD) is assisting by conducting an inspection.

As of 6 p.m., 511ga.org’s map showed delays on I-75 South back to the area of Northside Drive and Riverside Drive intersection. Riverside Drive was also showing delays, as well as I-75 North approaching the I-75/I-16 interchange.

The anticipated incident end time remained 9 p.m.

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – A crash on I-16 Eastbound at SR 87/US 80/MLK Jr. Blvd. in Macon has shut down all lanes, according to information from 511ga.org.

The crash, which appears to involve an 18-wheeler based on a photo shared on social media, was reported at 3:27 p.m. Thursday. As of 4:45 p.m., traffic closures are expected to last until at least 9 p.m., according to 511ga.org.

Drivers are advised to avoid the area and seek alternate routes. There has been no word on injuries or additional details about the crash at this time.
