Heath Heating And Cooling Gives Preparation Tips On Frozen Pipes

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) — The arctic blast in Middle Georgia could mean major problems to your plumbing.

That’s why Ricky Heath Plumbing, Heating, & Cooling is sharing a few tips to help prepare your home.

Operating Manager Rob Wixom says there are a few signs you will notice if you have a burst pipe.

“Temperatures play a big role in it, when it starts to get below freezing,” he said. “Obviously a pipe’s not gonna freeze at 35 degrees, but once you start getting under the freezing marker, the water will slow down a little bit as the ice builds up in the pipe,” he said. “It will start to slow down the rate of the water coming out of the pipe, and looking for signs of leaks, there may be a crack in there already.”

Wixom added there are a few places in your home that are prone to frozen pipes.

“Anything that’s on an outside wall is going to be prone to a frozen pipe,” he said. “Anything in crawl space or an attic. It’s the areas in the home that aren’t really heated very well. There’s some heat, but not enough to keep the pipes from freezing.”

According to Wixom, the company deals with this issue every winter season and says you should give a plumbing company a call if you have any issues.

“The first thing we got to get done is getting the water turned off,” he said. “And then well get with a remediation company to get somebody out there to get the water taken out, and then we fix the pipe after that, and then you’re back to square one where you started.”
