UPDATE (12/31/24): The railroad crossing at Tucker Road and Forsyth Road in Macon will reopen Thursday, January 2, after a safety review by the county’s Traffic Engineer, according to a Macon-Bibb County news release.
Crews will begin reinstalling stop and warning signs, setting up warning lights and removing barricades at 10 a.m. on the reopening day.
The crossing was temporarily closed on December 18, following a recommendation from the county’s Traffic Engineer to evaluate traffic patterns and consider potential safety improvements. ORIGINAL STORY (12/13/24):
MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – Macon-Bibb County will temporarily close the railroad crossing at Forsyth and Tucker Roads starting Wednesday, December 18, at 10 a.m., according to a news release from the county on Friday.
As part of the closure, the stop signs for northbound and southbound traffic will be removed, allowing free-flowing traffic along Rivoli Drive. Norfolk Southern will assist by securing the crossing to prevent vehicle access during this period.
“This temporary change will give the county a chance to look at safer traffic patterns and options for the area,” the release stated.
“There is a great deal of concern about the safety of that intersection due to its design, as well as how traffic flows through the whole area, and we want to use this time to determine if there are permanent changes that can make it safer,” Macon-Bibb Mayor Lester Miller said.
The intersection was the site of a fatal collision last month when a train struck an SUV near Tucker Road, critically injuring a 76-year-old woman who later died from her injuries.
