‘A dream come true’: Cochran couple open Bleckley County’s first liquor store

COCHRAN, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – Andy Ravleker says he and his wife Bijal were emotional when they learned they were bringing Cochran its very first liquor store.
“We were so happy,” Andy said. “We had a happy cry together.”
The Ravlekers started attending city council meetings in 2021, petitioning for a change to the local law that banned liquor sales in Bleckley County. Some residents opposed to the law change felt that liquor stores in Cochran would increase the likelihood of drunk driving.
Others like Jasmine Girtman, one of 7 Star Package’s first customers, felt that it was long overdue and that a shorter drive would make it easier for people to wait until they get home to crack open their drinks.
“Cochran has been wanting it for so, so long,” Girtman said. “We had not been able to get it. We don’t have to drive. It cuts down people drinking and driving. So, it’s just a wonderful thing to have.”
Bleckley County residents voted in 2022 to change the law, and Andy received his liquor licenses from the city and state earlier this year. Bijal was alongside her husband petitioning for the right to open their store, and she says she was relieved to see that his efforts were rewarded.
“I’m really happy for my husband because he really did hard work behind it,” Bijal said. “So, it’s kind of a dream come true for us.”
Before 7 Star Package, the nearest liquor store for Cochran residents was in Hawkinsville. Bijal says many customers thank the couple for saving them time and gas.
“They come and tell us like thank you so much for bringing a liquor store into town, they make me feel very happy for that,” Bijal said. “Because that means we did something right.”
The Ravlekers say they take great pride in contributing to the local economy, as Cochran residents will be spending more and more within city limits. The couple currently own a neighboring convenience store and has plans for opening new businesses in town. Andy says he and Bijal travel often, returning from each trip with more ideas on how to benefit people in the area.
“We’re looking for something new we can bring to this small town and this small community,” Andy said.
