Salvation Army of Greater Macon serves Thanksgiving meals to those in need

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – The Salvation Army of Greater Macon helps displaced and unhoused people year-round, but some say it means just a little bit more on Thanksgiving Day.
“I think it’s great to have people to come in, regardless of who they are, just to have a meal,” said Dewitt Holland, a nine-year Army veteran who served in Vietnam.
Holland was among those who got a free meal and the chance to fellowship for the holiday. He says this provided him and the others at the table a chance to forget about their circumstances and be thankful for their family at The Salvation Army.
“When you are away from home and have someone to open the doors for you like this it’s a blessing,” Holland said.
Christine Tuft-Rainey is a local pastor who has volunteered at The Salvation Army on Thanksgiving for almost two decades. Rainey credits The Salvation Army for helping guests feel the spirit of the holiday, providing meals and shelter, which in turns allows them to focus more on what there is to be thankful for.
“I hope they’re thankful for life, thankful for love, and thankful for togetherness, people sharing and caring,” Rainey said.
Rainey says she always feels better going home to spend Thanksgiving with her family after helping those who are less fortunate. She takes great pride in ensuring that each guest has a happier Thanksgiving than they otherwise would have if they didn’t stop by.
“There’s so many vets that are lost, but they can come here,” Rainey said. “I can talk to them and give them comfort that God still sees them, and God has something in store for them, a blessing.”
