Local Animal Groups Support SPLOST

Animal lovers are urging voters to head to the polls.

On Thursday, local animal groups and Bibb County Chairman Sam Hart rallied behind the SPLOST in hopes of improving the Macon-Bibb Animal Control Shelter.

According to the interim director of the animal control shelter, the current shelter needs to be replaced. He says it’s a health risk for the animals and the people who work there.

“These animals down there don’t deserve to be there. It’s a terrible place to work as far as having to share your lunch with cockroaches, who continuously fall down from the ceiling onto your food. You have mice running down the counter when you’re trying to brew coffee, or you can open up the oven to bake and cockroaches come streaming out. So we definitely need a new facility,” says Van VanDeWalker.

If the penny tax passes $3 million will be allocated to the center.
That money will be used to build a new facility and help expand educational programs for pet owners.
