USDA approves temporary waiver for SNAP benefits on hot foods in 84 Georgia counties
SNAP recipients can purchase hot foods in Georgia counties from October 8 through November 7 under USDA's temporary waiver.

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – The U.S. Department of Agriculture has approved a temporary waiver allowing SNAP recipients in 84 Georgia counties to use their benefits to purchase hot foods and meals consumed on retailer premises following the impact of Hurricane Helene.
This change, in effect from October 8 through November 7, applies to authorized SNAP retailers.
According to a USDA news release, the waiver applies to counties including Baldwin, Bleckley, Dodge, Hancock, Johnson, Laurens, Telfair, Treutlen, Twiggs, Washington Wheeler, Wilcox and Wilkinson, among others. The department is encouraging SNAP retailers in these counties to inform customers they can use their benefits for hot foods during this time.
“Hot foods purchased with SNAP benefits during this time are not subject to sales tax,” the release stated.
SNAP retailers in the affected counties are urged to post notices in their stores to inform eligible customers of the temporary change. The USDA also noted that where possible, customers may remain on-site to consume these hot meals.
