Georgia Highways Have Increase in Traffic For Labor Day Weekend

The highway travelers are out in full force this Labor Day weekend, which can cause extra time and headaches for drivers.

Megan and Tom Johnson came up to Macon from Florida for the holiday weekend to visit family. They say they noticed the extra cars on the road as they were driving north, and knew traffic would be heavier. But the Johnson’s said that it’s worth it to see family.

“It doesn’t bother me, not at all,” Tom says. “You gotta do what you gotta do,” Megan chimed in.

Carrie Stevens is making her way back to Florida, after she spent the long weekend with her parents in North Carolina.

She says traffic was “unbelievable”.

“It’s moving, it’s been worse sometimes, but the traffics moving. It’s just very heavy…way heavier than it’s ever been,” Stevens said.

G.S.P. also noticed the increase on the roads, but say, that’s what was expected.

“It’s a little bit higher, plus we had the rain come in, which caused some congestions,” G.S.P. Trooper Brandon Brown said.

Extra patrol officers have been dispatched around the state, to help deal with the influx of cars. Brown says, nearly everyone in the State Patrol office in Forsyth will be on the roads until the holiday weekend is over.

“All paper work is put on hold, that gets put off until tomorrow. So there will be no people doing admin. work or paper work…they’re all out on the roads, trying to keep people safe.

For G.S.P. officers, the Labor Day weekend officially ends at midnight on Monday. According to it’s website, G.S.P. is noting fewer crashes on the highways as compared to last year’s Labor Day weekend.
