September 9th Declared Otis Redding Day

Today, one of Macon’s biggest stars would be celebrating his 70th birthday. As a gift to his family, September 9th was officially declared “Otis Redding Day” in Macon and Bibb County.

The Southwest High School marching band kicked off the day of events in downtown Macon with a tribute to the late music legend. Mayor Robert Reichert and Chairman Sam Heart presented Redding’s daughter with dedications to the star.

“If he were here he would be so proud to see so many young people specifically out here participating in the program, and it’s just an honor, just an honor, not only for him, but for the city of Macon,” says Karla Redding Andrews, Otis Redding’s daughter.

The celebration will continue tomorrow at the Macon City Auditorium with an “Evening of Respect” tribute concert. The concert benefits the Big “O” Youth Educational Foundation.
