Macon-Bibb EMA and Georgia Power preparing for Hurricane Helene

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – Macon-Bibb County Emergency Management Agency Director Spencer Hawkins is closely watching weather maps to determine the best course of actions for hurricane Helene.
For now, he says the best course of action for you, is to stay inside.
“Don’t go outside, make sure you’re prepared, find your shelter-in-place location in your home, which is a closet, a bathroom,” he said. “Somewhere you and your household can shelter in the case that the winds get very high and very dangerous.”
Hawkins recommends having a plan in place just in case you need it. He says it will take away a lot of potential anxiety.
“Know what you’re going to do, know where your shelter-in-place location is, know how you’re going to move forward in case the power goes out and what needs to happen there,” he said.
Georgia Power is also keeping an eye on Helene. Spokesperson Amanda Arnold says they don’t have a staging center in Middle Georgia, but they’re always ready to call in their partner companies from surrounding states like Alabama and Mississippi if necessary.
“Just know, if you don’t see a power truck that doesn’t mean that we’re not working,” she said. “We’re always working behind the scenes to get the power restored after a storm. So, we may be working from a local command center or a local headquarter or sometimes we may be working from our headquarters up here in Atlanta.”
Arnold added they’re always working around the clock to get your power restored.
