Diseases Force Closure of Macon Animal Shelter

Macon Police say they are temporarily closing the Macon Animal Shelter to avoid a mass euthanasia.  An outbreak of parvo and giardia is to blame.  Both are debilitating diseases for animals.

Puppies currently at the animal shelter will be euthanized because they are the most susceptible to the disease.

All adult dogs and cats will be housed outside of the shelter.  Meanwhile, animal control workers will take three days to clean the shelter and have an exterminator fog the facility.

Animals should be able to return to the shelter on Friday, but adoptions will be delayed until August 30th because of a 14-day quarantine period designed to make sure the animals are disease-free.

Dogs and cats at the shelter with verifiable owners will be released to their owners, if they don’t test positive for the diseases.
