Slope repair work begins next week on portion of highway in Wilkinson County
The work is expected to be complete by Spring 2025, according to the Georgia Department of Transportation.

IRWINTON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – Work will begin next week on a slope repair project in southern Wilkinson County, according to a news release from the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT).
GDOT says the right lane and shoulder of U.S. Route 441/State Route 29 south are already closed to traffic due to a slope failure that caused the lane and shoulder to collapse.
Starting Tuesday, September 24, the contractor, Griffin Grading and Concrete, will build a retaining wall to hold up the slope and prevent further issues. Traffic will be shifted to the northbound lanes using existing median crossovers, and there will be only one lane of northbound traffic and one lane of southbound traffic until the project is complete. Traffic will be shifted for 1.5 miles, according to GDOT.
The work is projected to be finished by Spring 2025.
