Back to school: School nutritionists aim to provide healthy and flavorful meals for students
Students at St. Joseph's will have two salad options, a weekly soup, entree and dessert.

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) –School nutritionists around Middle Georgia aim to provide healthy and flavorful meals for students.
Director of School Nutrition, Phoebe Layson, says students in Peach County like hot meals and flavor.
“So we have done flavor shakers that do not have salt, that just provide a lot of seasoning,” says Layson. “That has a lot of herbs and things like that in it.“
Schools in Peach County participate in the Community Eligibility Provision which provides meals free of cost to students. Layson wants to remind parents that just because the meal is free to students, it doesn’t mean the quality is low.
“We try our best to maintain food quality so that people don’t feel like just because we’re not charging them, that they’re getting a cheaper product. We do get the highest quality we can,” says Layson.
In Monroe County, the school district is offering nutritious meals with a fresh component.
Director of Nutrition for the Monroe County School System, Danny Durham, says the district has a garden that students can pick fresh produce from.
The garden at T.G. Scott provides a place for students to learn about the importance of growing your own produce and allows them the opportunity to help create meals.
Durham shares all that the garden has and says “Fresh herbs and spices, tomatoes that students, when they come in line, they can look out the windows and see those growing outside.”
At St. Joseph’s Catholic School, Chelsia Ogletree is the new chef that will cook customized meals for students.
Ogletree is also the chef at Her Majesty Kitchen and says “food is a love language that goes untold”.
“We wanted to empower our students, the community and letting them know that you can eat well and also have fun while eating the food,” says Ogletree.
