Macon City Council OK’s Vote To Change Alcohol Ordinance

Macon City Council members unanimously voted Monday to let the people decide in November whether alcohol should be allowed to be sold on Sunday.

However, many local liquor store owners aren’t thrilled about the decision. Some told 41NBC that Sunday is their only day off, and  that sales wouldn’t increase if the ordinance were changed.

City Council members seem to think differently.

“I’ve had numerous requests through the years before I became elected and after for Sunday alcohol sales, and that first step had to be taken by the legislature,” said Council member Lauren Benedict. “…It will increase tax revenue for the city and that’s one of the reasons I’m interested in it–as well as just to give our residents the freedom to purchase alcohol when they might do their grocery shopping on Sunday just like they would on a Tuesday or a Thursday.”

Council members say the state gave local governments clearance to decide whether this option will appear on the ballot.

If residents vote yes to the change, then store owners will be allowed to sell alcohol packaged to go on Sundays from 12:30 to 11:30 pm.
