Houston County leaders plan millage rate rollback amid rising property values
New property tax assessment notices reflect higher values, prompting millage rate reduction plans

HOUSTON COUNTY, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) — Houston County leaders are planning to roll back the millage rate for property taxes, as new property tax assessment notices are reflecting higher property values.
According to county commission chair Dan Perdue, that means you probably will not have to pay more in your county property taxes.
He expects the school board and the cities in the county to also consider rolling back their millage rates.
The new notices reflecting the higher appraised values sparked concerns from many residents. Chairman Perdue says those valuations are connected to current housing costs.
“Property value and what people are willing to pay for them that ties very closely to a fair market value had been rising rapidly,” he said. “That’s due to a lack of housing supply, and a lot of people want to locate here. And, so where those supply and demand curves cross have been increasing value, and certainly, the values of people’s properties are raising, and we have to be reflective of that in our tax appraisals.”
If you live in Houston County and think your property’s newly assessed value is wrong, you can contact the Houston County Board of Assessors for an explanation, or to go through the appeals process.
Perdue says he expects the commission to set the new millage rate sometime in August.
