MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – NewTown Macon announced Monday it won the Great American Main Street Award at the Main Street Now Conference in Birmingham, Alabama.

The award, given annually, recognizes communities that demonstrate outstanding preservation-based revitalization.

“This prestigious award is the only award that recognizes a community’s comprehensive, preservation-based approach to revitalization,” a NewTown Facebook post stated. “In the history of the Main Street program, only about 100 communities across the nation have won this award, making our organization part of an elite group of winners.”

According to a news release from Main Street America, NewTown Macon has added 371 housing units, 67 storefronts, and more than 1,000 residents.

NewTown Macon joins Madison Main Street from Madison, Indiana, and Monroeville Main Street in Monroeville, Alabama, as this year’s recipients.

To celebrate, NewTown Macon says it will partner with Bragg Jam for the “ultimate Second Sunday” event this weekend, from 5 to 8 p.m. at Coleman Hill.

The event will feature a free concert by Blak Pearl, live music, free face painting, balloon art, games and more. The first 50 people to arrive between 5:30 and 6 p.m. will receive a free Downtown Macon T-shirt.
