Middle Georgia Farmer Deals with Drought

This summer beating the heat in Middle Georgia is tough. For local blueberry farmer Thaddeus Wach, the lack of rainfall means his berries are in danger of dying.

“We would have some, but not nearly as much as we do now… that 2 inches of rain had a tremendous effect on our crop.”

His farm is two and a half acres large. He says even with a built in irrigation system to keep the roots fed, it’s not enough to make his berries blossom. He counts on the farm every year for income.

“It takes a lot of fertilizing, and then we have to pay the electric bill, and we also help our grandchildren along when they need it, and taxes on the land, of course we have to pay taxes.”

Wach says he gets hundreds of customers from all over Middle Georgia. He’s thankful he’s able to keep the farm open for them.

“I think we’ll do pretty good this year, not the best, but I don’t know what we’d do without it.”
