Washington County Sheriff’s Office warns residents of scams

Scammers are claiming to be a Deputy with the Washington County Sheriff's Department.

WASHINGTON COUNTY, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – The Washington County Sheriff’s Office is alerting the community of suspicious individuals attempting to scam residents, according to Sheriff Joel Cochran.

The scammer claims to be a Deputy with the Washington County Sheriff’s Department. Investigators say that Georgia has Sheriff’s Offices, not Sheriff’s Departments.

Residents are being told that they have missed an audit on a PPE loan and that there is a detainer on them. Washington County Sheriff’s Office does not handle Federal matters such as a PPE loan.

The Washington County Sheriff’s Office says they will never call about anything like this and that is a scam call.

The number on the caller ID shows several numbers starting with (478)346-xxxx.

If you have given banking or personal information to the scammers, call 911.
