Middle Georgians Beat the Summer Heat

With the mercury rising into the triple digits, the summer months can be rough.

LawnStar Owner Mickey Bass says, “I drink probably twelve to fourteen bottles of water a day and I mix in a couple of Gatorades and I spray down with sunscreen about every 2 or 3 yards.”

Bass cuts about 10 yards a day.

Drew Jennings spruces up plastic car parts which forces him to spend most of his work week outside.

“We are constantly outside. We are always working out in the good ol’ sun.”

Scott Hamlin spends about 40 hours a week working outdoors. He also knows a little something about beating the heat.

“I’m building a deck, I’ve been doing trim work, putting shutters on the front, tile work…”

All three men say staying hydrated is key, in addition to a few other elements.

Hamlin says it’s important to wear light colored clothing.

Escaping the dog days of summer may not be in this season’s forecast, but wearing a hat, quenching your thirst, and loading up on SPF will keep you from sizzling in the sun.

Mid Georgia Ambulance Paramedic Chuck Asbell says a common heat-related incident is a sunburn. Sunburns can cause up to 3rd degree burns.

Asbell recommends drinking at least 64 ounces of water, wearing and reapplying sunscreen, and taking frequent breaks in the shade.
